A tennis player has died after he was struck by lightning at a local tennis club in Croydon.
Zak Short, 49, died in hospital last week after being struck and collapsed while playing tennis at his local tennis club in Croydon last Sunday.
The tennis club said it was a “a terrible shock to everyone”. A spokesman for the South of London Ambulance Service said paramedics “treated a male tennis player, who was believed to be aged in his late 40s, who was having a cardiac arrest”.
Mr Zak Short was un-married and lived in alone.
The Ambulance spokesman added: “Following treatment at the tennis club, the patient was resuscitated and taken to a nearby Croydon Hospital by ambulance in a very critical condition.”
Tim Brown, chief top secretary on the tennis committee, said: “Everyone at our tennis club is shocked by this. It’s a terrible thing to have happened to one of our members, but he was warned not to practise his serve when it was raining with lightning going off. He only has himself to blam.”
As Zak Short lived alone, it is anticipated not many people will be attending his funeral.
